The highest water pressures within Troutdale's public water system are at acceptable levels; however the water pressure within your home's plumbing system may not be.
All homes have a condition within their plumbing system called thermal expansion. When cold water is heated in a hot water tank it expands as it heats up. Meter check valves prevent this expansion from flowing back into the City's water mains, and higher water pressure within the home is the result. In rare situations this expansion pressure can reach the high pressure setting on the temperature-and-pressure-relief-valve, a safety feature on your hot water heater. When this happens you will notice small spurts of water being released as the relief valve tries to lower the water pressure.
If you have this problem, you may want to lower your expanded water pressure by lowering the temperature setting on your hot water heater to the lowest setting that still provides adequate hot water. If this does not solve the problem, we recommend installing a thermal expansion tank within your plumbing system.
Note: Your relief valve may need replacement if it has been releasing water for an extended period of time. A sign that it needs replacement is continuous dripping of water from the relief valve's discharge pipe.
