Business Recycling Requirement

Since 2008, Metro Council has put recycling requirements for businesses in place to formalize good recycling practices and provide a level playing field for all businesses.

Local businesses are required to recycle all types of paper and certain containers such as plastic bottles, aluminum cans and glass – generally,  the same items residents already recycle at home. Businesses must also contract with a hauler to have regularly scheduled recycling service and provide employees the opportunity to recycle. Education and technical assistance is available through the Recycle at Work program. In the City of Troutdale, education and technical assistance is offered through Portland State University's Community Environmental Services.

A business or property manager would comply with the ordinance by doing the following:

  • Provide recycling containers for employees
  • Post signs and instructions on how to recycle
  • Recycle paper and containers
